NINA SKY Brooklyn Museum First Saturdays

On July 5th, beat the heat and celebrate summertime in Brooklyn with outdoor activities, music, and films at the Brooklyn Museum’s Target FirstSaturday.  Highlights include music by Nina Sky and Blitz the Ambassador, a screening of Do the Right Thing, a comedy showcase, and much more.

Here is Brooklyn Museum’s lineup:

4:30 p.m. Interactives: Add your mark to sidewalk chalk drawings led by The City Kids, and hula hoop away with members of Hulu Nation.

 5 p.m. Music: Matuto fuses Afro-Brazilian beats with folk and bluegrass.

6 p.m. Film: Do the Right Thing (Spike Lee, 1989, 120 min.). On the hottest day of the year, on a street in Bed-Stuy, racial and social tensions meet head on with tragic consequences. 

6 p.m. Talk: Curious tales from Brooklyn’s history are told by a local historian.

6:30-8:30 Hands-On Art: Sketch from a live model to learn the art of figure drawing.

7 p.m. Music: In his only summer show in New York City, Blitz the Ambassador blends African popular sounds and American vintage soul with hard-hitting beats and lyrics.

7 p.m. Interactive Talk: Filmmakers Paul Trillo and Landon Van Soest discuss theirBrooklyn in 3,000 Stills project. Bring your smartphone and contribute to a crowd-sourced portrait of Brooklyn.

8 p.m. Comedy: Erica Watson hosts a showcase of female comedians.

8 p.m. Book Club: Brooklyn-based photographer, writer, and DJ Michel July talks with some of his collaborators about his new coffee table-style book Afros: A Celebration of Natural Hair.

9 p.m. Music: Chart-topping R&B duo Nina Sky performs their biggest hits and songs from their latest album.
